What is PDF to Excel?
PDF to Excel is a free online converter that extracts the tables inside a PDF and rebuilds them as an editable Excel spreadsheet (.xlsx). A table locked inside a PDF looks like a table, but you cannot sort it, sum a column or paste it into another sheet. This tool recovers the underlying structure so the data behaves like real spreadsheet cells again.
It works on two types of source. Digital PDFs, such as exported reports and online statements, carry machine-readable text that maps cleanly into rows and columns. Scanned or photographed PDFs are images, so the converter first runs optical character recognition to read the figures, then reconstructs the grid. What kinds of tables convert best
Clean, clearly ruled tables convert most reliably. When every column has a visible border and each cell holds a single value, the tool can place data with high confidence. Borderless tables, merged cells and tables with wrapped multi-line entries are harder, and you may need to nudge a few cells once the file opens in Excel.
Scanned tables add another variable: image quality. The OCR engine is strong on crisp printed figures and good on tidy scans, but faint photocopies and skewed phone photos invite misreads. Verify your numbers
Because a single misread digit can throw off a whole column, treat the converted spreadsheet as a draft until you have checked it. Compare key totals against the original PDF, and watch for the usual OCR confusions between similar characters. Excel, CSV or plain text?
Excel is the right target when you want a working spreadsheet you can format, chart and extend with formulas.
