Common scenarios
Translating a sign or menu
Crop tightly to the text you want, since signs and menus often sit on busy backgrounds. Even lighting and a square-on angle help a lot. For short, stylised signage, expect to lightly correct the extraction before translating.
Translating a document or letter
Documents are usually cleaner than signage, so OCR does well — but they're longer, so a quick proofread of the extracted text pays off before you translate the whole thing. If the document is a PDF rather than a photo, our other extraction tools may suit it better.
Translating handwriting
Handwritten foreign text is the hardest case, because you're stacking two difficult problems: reading the handwriting and the foreign script. Neat printing has a chance; cursive is best-effort at most. Verify the extraction carefully before trusting any translation.

- Translate clean text, not the photo. Always confirm the OCR output looks right first.
- Keep numbers and names in view. These don't translate and are exactly where OCR errors hide.
- Watch for accents and diacritics, which can flip a word's meaning if dropped.
- Treat translation as a guide, not gospel for anything legal, medical or contractual — get a human translator for high-stakes text.
- Re-extract rather than over-correct. If the OCR output is badly garbled, a sharper, better-lit recapture usually beats hand-fixing dozens of characters.
